What is Two-Factor Authentication?
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is a security process requiring two forms of identification to access an account: something you know, like a password, and something you have, like a smartphone.
How Does It Work?
After entering a username and password, users provide a second identifier, typically a unique time-limited code via app, SMS, or email.
Types of 2FA
- SMS-based authentication
- Authenticator app-based (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator)
- Hardware-based (USB key)
- Biometric-based (fingerprint, facial recognition)
Conclusion
2FA is an essential security measure that adds a critical extra layer of protection for online accounts, making it much harder for cybercriminals to gain access even if a password is compromised.
